LONDON: Senior National Health Service (NHS) consultant Dr Ijaz Rehman has demanded a public apology from his former wife Reham Khan within a week or else he will reveal “facts” about the breakdown of their 10 year long marriage.

The Mail on Sunday quoted Dr Reham as saying that Reham Khan should “apologise for the slur to my good name and character” about the domestic violence allegations that she made during a TV interview in which Imran Khan also appeared alongside his new bride.

Dr Reham the Mail on Sunday that Reham “lied in a TV programme that she was a victim of domestic violence during our marriage of 10 years”.

“She knows that what she said is not true and while I do not want to get involved in mudslinging, I will defend myself vigorously if she does not set the record straight.”

The Mail on Sunday quoted Dr Ijaz Rehman as saying: “She knows that what she said is not true and while I do not want to get involved in mudslinging, I will defend myself vigorously if she does not set the record straight.”

The paper quoted Dr Rehman as saying that Reham had made these allegations to “win sympathy from a Pakistani public hostile towards her new marriage”.

“What Reham said about domestic violence was in order for her to be seen in good light and come out as an innocent victim to cover her deeds, at my expense,” Dr Rehman said. “I ask her to act honourably and honestly and issue an apology and retract her statement within a week. I have never lifted my hands on anyone and I have never been involved in any kind of domestic violence in any shape or form. As for her claim that I left her penniless, I have always looked after her and my children.”

The 54-year-old psychiatrist with whom Reham has three children was quoted by a Pakistani paper as saying: “I give Reham a week to apologise or retract her statement and state categorically that domestic violence had nothing to do with our marriage breakdown. Reham knows that what she said is not true and while I do not want to get involved in mudslinging, I will defend myself vigorously if she does not set the record straight.”

The former BBC presenter who tied the knot with PTI chief Imran Khan in Bani Gala on January 8 has said that “domestic violence” happens in many shapes and forms, suggesting that she was subjected to it.

“I have never spoken about my personal experience of domestic violence because I was in [the] media and I felt it would be unfair to expose the other party,” she added.

However, Dr Rehman strongly denies these allegations and since these allegations were aired and published, he has issued two statement, firstly denying ever being involved in domestic violence and now threatening to state “facts” about their marriage breakdown.

Claiming that he has been “defamed” and “character assassinated”, the NHS psychologist warned, “If [Reham] fails to apologise, set the record straight by retracting her statement unreservedly then I will state the facts about our marriage breakdown, which will be rather uncomfortable for her and those who have trashed me on baseless grounds to give Reham a clean chit”.

Dr Ijaz Rehman and Reham Khan are cousins and during ten years of their marriage they lived in Lincolnshire until they split in 2005. Reham eventually moved to East London and went on to work as a weather presenter for regional programme South Today and moved to Pakistan in 2012 and began her TV career on news talk shows.

Dr Ijaz Rehman added: “I would not be able to work as a senior NHS consultant if I ever I was involved in any kind of DV. I have a clean record and I have never violated laws of this country or that of another country.”
