ISLAMABAD: The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) came under fire from the government on Tuesday as the PML-N adopted a more aggressive stance against allegations levelled in the wake of the Panama Papers leak.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday at the Press Information Department (PID), MNA Daniyal Aziz criticised ICIJ - a globally-renowned entity - and accused it of making regular factual mistakes.

“ICIJ is not a credible entity and has been making mistakes,” he said.

Declaring ICIJ’s journalism “failed”, Mr Aziz said the ruling party has initiated legal proceedings against the global network of investigative journalists.

The government just recently celebrated corrections made by ICIJ in their records, saying that the prime minister’s name was not included in the Panama Papers.

For highlighting the corrections made by ICIJ in their records, the government spent Rs11.16 million on official advertisements in print media.

“Those associated with PPP, PTI and PML-Q are directly involved while the prime minister is not,” Mr Aziz said, but it wasn’t clear if he thought that those allegations were more or less credible than the ones levelled against the PM’s family.
