Chaudhrys seek PTI support for LG slot

GUJRAT: The Chaudhrys have sought support from Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI’s) Syed Noor Shah and Chaudhry Arshad for the top slot of Gujrat district council.

Senior party leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi arrived at Kulewal Syedan on Monday where he met with group leaders Syed Noor Shah and Syed Madad Ali Shah. Several PTI members were present at the meeting.

Afterwards, Mr Elahi visited former MPA Chaudhry Arshad in Sara-i-Alamgir who has twice been PML-Q MPA but now he is in the PTI.

Both the Kulewal group and the Arshad group had been the allies of Chaudhris in local politics for decades until they joined the PTI last year. Of PTI’s 15 seats in the Gujrat district council, 14 are from Kharian and Sara-i-Alamgir tehsils. The PTI could bag only one seat in Gujrat tehsil.

PML-Q’s Chaudhry Shujaat Husain is also separately meetings PTI members. On Sunday, he visited the residences of Chaudhry Ijaz Aslam in Kharian and Farooq Bhatti and Chaudhary Haneef in Sara-i-Alamgir and felicitated them on their victory besides asking them to vote for the PML-Q candidate in the Gujrat district council.

Sources told Dawn PML-Q leaders had been contacting PTI workers in the wake of an understanding between Punjab PTI leader Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and Mr Elahi during a meeting in Lahore.Former federal minister Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain earlier visited independent members of the district council last week. The Chaudhrys have hinted at pitching one of their family members for the Gujrat district council chairman.
