Abbasi was born in Lahore on 4 January 1966. He got his early education from Muslim League High School, Lahore. He then attended the FC College and University of the Punjab. Political career
Abbasi started his political career in 1977 as a student. He joined Jamaat-e-Islami and contested in by-elections as Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal's (MMA) candidate from NA-56 (Rawalpindi VII) – after Sheikh Rashid vacated the seat in 2002 – and defeated Rashid's nephew Sheikh Rashid Shafiq. Abbasi joined centre-right party Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) in 2008. He contested from the same constituency during the 2008 general election, and defeated Rashid with a heavy margin. Abbasi accumulated 73,433 votes, and his nearest opponent Shaukat Hayyat Khan of Pakistan Peoples Party took 22,720 where as Rashid only managed 10,964 votes. He is the PML-N's candidate from NA-56 for the 2013 general elections, and will compete against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.
