Ali Ahmad Kurd is a Pakistani lawyer who has served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan and is prominent in the Lawyers' Movement in that country. He opposed President Pervez Musharraf.

Activism

While vice-chairman of the Balochistan Bar Association in 2002, Ali Ahmad Kurd staged a protest burning of amendments to the constitution that had been proposed by Musharraf. The action formed part of wider protests by lawyers' associations, religious bodies and political parties in reaction to what they perceived to be attempts by Musharraf to undermine his opponents and consolidate his own power.

Kurd was briefly detained on 29 April 2007 in Quetta on the charges of inciting people during an absentia funeral of Nawab Akbar Bugti a year earlier. His detention was protested by lawyers and police released him, claiming that there had been no arrest and that the matter was a misunderstanding. Kurd was at that time vice-chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council.

After imposing martial law in Pakistan on 3 November 2007, Musharraf suspended the constitution and Kurd was among those placed under house arrest. He was released in March 2008.

Later, in March 2009 when President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Kurd led protests by lawyers seeking the return of an independent judiciary. These protests were influential in the reinstatement of Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry as Chief Justice. Chaudhry had been removed from his position by Musharraf and the decision was not reversed under the presidency of Asif Ali Zardari until the lawyers began a mass march from Lahore to Islamabad that was supported by large crowds and coincided with rioting.

In 2012, Kurd was considered as a nominee for the post of Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz but was ruled out of contention due to constitutional ineligibility. He had also been considered as a possible caretaker prime minister.

?People like Kurd are a rare specie in Pakistan. He right to say that judiciary of pakistan is not functioning the way it should have been. In my opinion a judge should unbiased, innocent, should not attend state and social functions except his/her very close relations, should not see political debate on tv and not read political reviews on news papers. This is why Kurd has criticized the judges that they are influenced by tv progammes and news papers articles. The supreme court should stop TV anchors presenting lopsided political programmes and present balanced programmes where both parties are given chance to present and defend themselves.Such lopsided Shaheen Sahbai,Insar Abbasi etc.

he should get matured he is still in his college like leadership its share tragedy that he is leading the lawyers just because of his speeches and showing his anger against Musrraf not because of intelligence or winning cases in court for which is has been so called lawyer. Pakistani nation is lead by the persons who not are educated nor intelligence or they have any proven record that have done good to nation. God bless Pakistan

If your cheater Chaudhry wants the power after a deal with Cheaters like nawaz and zardari, so why he didn't except the offer of Sir Pervaiz Musharaf, at least Pervaiz Musharaf is much much better then the two cheaters.

Normally if we say something for someone,it means that we are limiting his personality.Whereas regarding Mr.Ali Ahmed kurd, if i will start to write about him,i will be unable to stop myself, because he is the only light on the other side of tunnel. They way he handled the movement with other colleagues was a first step towards prosperous Pakistan. Thanks Mr. Kurd, thanks, for your devotion towards movement of independence of judiciary. But in last it is requested that for God sake do not forget the sacrifices of those lawyers, and common man who sacrificed their lives for this noble cause with the slogan of " Equal Justice For All Without Any Status Discrimination". Last but not least God Bless You Mr. Kurd.

Syed Mustafa Zaidi ( Mississauga,Canada) Tuesday, March 24, 2009 10:57:21 AM (MDT - USA)
With due respect to Mr. Ali Ahmed kurd, what he has done to abolish karo kari in his own province and sardari nizam. If he can mobilize lawyers against two presidents of a country and succeeds. It is very astonishing that he is unable to mobilize lawyers and civil societies from to Baluchistan to abolish karo kari and punish those who are killing woman and men who want to live their life by their choice. If so far he has not started any movement for these innocent people from his own home, then his role torch bearer for justice becomes doubtful.

For Mr. Shahid Siddique.., Sir, Movement for Justice is not the restoration of CJ, it is for the rule of law and against the illegal actions of Nov2, if u want to remove the CJ, a lawfull course of action as per the constitution / law has to be followed. If u are sure that CJ has such property give the evidance to the ruling party and advise them to launch a case accordingly and punish the culprit (if proved) through a judiciary recognized by the masses.
