Justice Syed Zahid Hussain was appointed as judge of the Lahore High Court on May 21, 1998 and was confirmed on May 19, 1999. He had also been remained a company judge at the LHC, member committee for revision of High Court, member election tribunal, member LHC administration committee, chairman enrolment committee of the Punjab Bar Council and member of the Committee for Recruitment of additional District and Sessions Judges. He belonged to Narowal district and started legal practice as a lawyer in 1972. He had been an associate of SM Zafar. Justice Zahid will be the 37th chief justice of the LHC since its inception in 1866. Justice Zahid will retire on December 14, 2011, at the age of 62. Before imposition of emergency rule and PCO, Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif was the senior most judge of the LHC and was eligible to be appointed as the chief justice, but Justice Zahid Hussain became the senior most judges after Justice Sharif refused to take oath under the PCO. Since creation of Pakistan, Justice Syed Zahid Hussain would be the forth chief justice who would be in the office for four or more years. The other three were Justice Muhammad Munir, Justice Sardar Muhammad Iqbal and Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry. However, the outgoing chief justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry’s duration was the longest, which reached six years. Justice Iftikhar was appointed as additional judge of the LHC on august 7, 1994, and was confirmed on June 5, 1995. He was appointed as 36th chief justice of the LHC on September 7, 2002.
