azi Hussain Ahmad (1938-) is the president of the Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami, a major political party in Pakistan. Ahmad is also head of the Muttahidah Majlis-e-'Amal (English: Council of United Action), a coalition between religious-political parties.
Pakistan today is undergoing an Islamic renaissance. The man responsible for this is no other than Qazi Hussain Ahmed. A man of letters, Qazi Sahib is fully aware of the politico-economic and human geography of the world.
He is a compelling author, an eloquent speaker, a visionary and a man thoroughly equipped with the knowledge of both the sacred and mundane. His love for poetry particularly of Iqbal makes him a unique leader among the religious and political circles. Apart from thorough command over Pushto, Urdu and English he has considerable proficiency in, Arabic and Persian.
His affiliation with the Islamic Movement started in his school days when he joined Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, Pakistan. He became member of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1970 and was elected to the office of President of its Peshawar branch. He served Jamaat-e-Islami as Secretary and then Ameer of NWFP province. He was raised to the office of Secretary General, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in 1978 and after elected as Ameer (Chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in 1987, continues to serve in that capacity, getting re-elected thrice (1992, 1994, 1999).
Qazi Hussain Ahmad was first elected as member of the Senate of Pakistan in 1986 for a term of six years. He was re-elected as such in March 1992, but he resigned as a Senator in 1996 as a protest against the corrupt political system.
azi Sahib is a firm believer in the unity of Muslim Ummah, and has strived to unite the Muslims of this country. Thanks to his restless efforts all major religious parties of the country have united under the banner of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA).
